Dragon boating is believed to be the world's oldest water sport, starting in China around 2,500 years ago. Whilst the sport's exact origins are now lost in legend, the enthusiasm for dragon boating has continued to grow as more and more people worldwide try the sport, enjoy the benefits and look for events to participate in. Such is the success of this growth that dragon boating is now the World's second largest sport by participation (second only to football!) and was introduced as a demonstration sport at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
The Salford Dragon Boat Festival
The Salford Dragon Boat Festival was started in 2010 and is one of a number of 'Open Festivals' in the UK. Unlike other dragon boat racing events, which are usually closed events organised by and for the benefit of a single client charity, the Salford Dragon Boat Festival is an open event where teams entering can nominate their own charity.
It is also designed as an event where charities (or regional branches of larger national charities who lack the resources or means to organise their own closed event) can benefit from the fund raising power of a dragon boat racing event. As the event is already organised, all they have to do is to ask their corporate & community partners to enter teams and fundraise for them.
As of 1st Jan 2020, 87 charities have so far been helped and £173,744 raised since 2010.
Race The Dragon are widely recognised as the leading provider of Charity, Corporate, Community and Youth dragon boat events and festivals in the UK today. As well as being used to supply the Salford Dragon Boat Festival, Race The Dragon also provides events for leading clients such as the Isle of Wight Music Festival Dragon Boat Race, a large proportion of the UK's Rotary dragon boat racing events and various Lord Mayor's Appeal Dragon Boat Festivals, including the 3-day Bradford Dragon Boat Festival.
